A Mind for Numbers
A Mind for Numbers is engineering professor Barbara Oakley's guide to learning math and science, written as the companion to her hugely popular Coursera course “Learning How to Learn.” Oakley failed her way through math and science in school before retraining her brain as an adult, and the book draws on that experience plus cognitive science research. Its central idea is that the brain alternates between two modes of thinking — a focused mode for concentrated problem-solving and a diffuse mode that works in the background during rest or distraction — and that mastering difficult material requires deliberately shifting between the two. The book teaches concrete techniques including chunking information into usable mental blocks, spaced repetition, active recall, and using analogies to make abstract concepts concrete, alongside strategies for beating procrastination and building productive study habits. It is aimed at students struggling with a math or science requirement and at adults retraining for a new career who assume they are not math people. Oakley's argument is that the capacity to learn technical material is a trainable skill, not a fixed trait.
