Ketogenic Therapy in Serious Mental Illness: Emerging Evidence
Zoltan SarnyaiChristopher M. Palmer
Commentary co-authored by Christopher Palmer synthesizing preclinical and clinical evidence for ketogenic metabolic therapy in serious mental illness. Preclinical work shows a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet prevents schizophrenia-like behaviors in rodent models; clinical evidence includes case reports of sustained symptom remission, including one patient medication-free for 12 years. The authors call the evidence encouraging but preliminary and call for randomized controlled trials.
