Seeking connection, autonomy, and emotional feedback: A self-determination theory of self-regulation in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
Rebecca E. ChampMarios AdamouBarry Tolchard
Theoretical paper proposing a comprehensive Self-Determination Theory account of ADHD self-regulation. The authors argue that behaviors typically read as impulsive, unmotivated, or oppositional are better understood as attempts to meet unmet needs for connection, autonomy, and emotional feedback -- reframing ADHD motivation around what engages a person's interest and sense of agency rather than around a generic motivation deficit.
