How to Study Effectively for Exams When Time Is Short

A looming deadline changes the math on how to study. Here is what to do when you do not have the weeks that ideal spacing assumes.

How should exam revision change when time is short?

When time is short, drop re-reading entirely and spend nearly all remaining hours on retrieval practice, testing yourself instead of reviewing notes, with whatever spacing the remaining days allow. A meta-analysis of 22 classroom studies covering more than 3,000 students found a moderate advantage for spaced over massed practice (d = 0.54), and the effect tended to grow with a longer gap before the test, which means spacing still helps even in a compressed window, just proportionally less than it would with weeks to work with. Retrieval practice, by contrast, doesn't lose its power under time pressure. A classroom study that tested it directly against re-reading with real material found a clear advantage for testing regardless of how the sessions were spaced.

Is it too late for spacing if the exam is only a few days away?

A few days is still enough time to space, just on a compressed schedule rather than the days-to-weeks version. The classroom meta-analysis found effect sizes were generally larger with longer retention intervals, but the underlying advantage of spaced over massed practice showed up across a range of interval lengths, not only long ones. Two review sessions with a night's sleep between them still outperforms one long session covering the same material, because the gap, even a short one, forces a small amount of forgetting that makes the next relearning attempt stronger.

A compressed schedule that still uses spacing: if you have three days, don't spend all three doing first-pass reading. Spend day one on first-pass reading plus immediate retrieval practice (testing yourself the same day you first learned it). Spend day two almost entirely on retrieval practice across everything covered so far, with new material only where genuinely uncovered. Spend the final day on retrieval practice exclusively, prioritized by what you got wrong on day two. Each day is a spaced repetition of the same material through a different retrieval attempt, not a fresh read-through.

Should I keep re-reading my notes with limited time left?

No. Re-reading feels productive precisely because it's low-effort and the material looks increasingly familiar with each pass, but that familiarity is recognition, not recall, and recognition is not what an exam tests. With limited time, every hour spent re-reading is an hour not spent building the specific skill, cold recall with nothing in front of you, that the exam will actually require.

The classroom study on retrieval practice used a testing procedure with accuracy feedback, students kept testing on material until they got it fully correct, rather than a fixed number of passes. That structure is worth copying under time pressure: don't decide in advance how many times you'll review something. Test it, and keep retesting specifically the items you get wrong, until you get them right. This concentrates your remaining hours on your actual weak points instead of spreading them evenly across material you already know.

How does anxiety affect what you can actually recall in the exam room?

Anxiety pulls working memory capacity away from the task at hand, because part of your attention gets consumed by the anxious thoughts themselves rather than staying available for retrieving the answer. This produces the specific, frustrating experience of blanking on material you could recall perfectly the night before: the knowledge is still there, but the retrieval channel is partly occupied by worry about the outcome.

A large study of 2,523 undergraduates examined how self-esteem related to procrastination and found that perfectionism significantly mediated part of that relationship, meaning higher perfectionism was linked to more delay rather than less. The same dynamic often shows up as exam anxiety: a fear of not performing perfectly can itself become the thing that blocks performance, both in the lead-up (avoiding study because it feels inadequate) and in the room (anxious monitoring competing with recall).

What helps in the moment: practicing retrieval under conditions that resemble the actual exam, timed, without notes, ideally in the same format as the real test, builds familiarity with performing under that specific pressure, so the exam room itself becomes less novel and less anxiety-provoking. Familiarity with the retrieval conditions, not just the material, is part of what timed practice tests actually train.

What should the final 24 to 48 hours look like?

The final stretch is for consolidation, not new material. A nationwide study of 88,149 adolescents found that self-regulated learning, monitoring your own progress and adjusting accordingly, was significantly associated with achievement partly through its effect on academic emotions: better self-regulation supported a more positive emotional experience, which in turn supported further self-regulation. In the final hours before an exam, that means using self-testing specifically to identify what still isn't solid, rather than passively consuming everything one more time, because accurate self-assessment close to the exam does more for both your preparation and your confidence than one more full read-through.

Sleep in the final 24 hours matters more than an extra hour of review, because consolidation, the process that turns a recently retrieved memory into a stable, retrievable one, happens substantially during sleep. Trading the last few hours before bed for sleep instead of a final cram session is not giving up ground, it's protecting the ground you've already built.

A practical final-day structure: morning, retrieval practice on your weakest topics only, identified from the previous day's testing. Afternoon, a short, timed practice test under conditions resembling the real exam. Evening, light review of anything that still felt shaky in the practice test, then stop with enough time left for a full night's sleep.

Building a repeatable exam routine, not just surviving this one

Even under time pressure, the method that works is the same one that works with more time, retrieval before review, spacing wherever the calendar allows, and testing under realistic conditions before the actual exam. What changes under pressure is proportion, less first-pass reading, more testing, tighter spacing intervals, not the underlying approach. Building this as a routine now, rather than treating it as an emergency measure for one exam, means the next deadline won't require rebuilding the method from scratch.

Where to start right now

Open one set of notes and turn the next twenty minutes into a testing session instead of a reading session. Write down everything you remember before checking anything. Whatever you missed becomes tomorrow's first target, and that's the whole plan for a routine that holds up even when the clock is genuinely short.
