The common advice, remove every distraction from your desk, is not what the evidence supports. Two preregistered studies found no strong evidence that a distracting second video on screen hurt comprehension or memory at all. The real damage comes from somewhere else: your own mind wandering off the page, background cognitive interference wearing down your flow, and a phone stealing your sleep. Fix those three, and you can stop treating your study space like a sealed room.
If you have ever tried to study with total silence, no phone, nothing else on screen, and still couldn't retain a page, you already suspected the desk wasn't the problem. It wasn't.
Does watching something while studying actually hurt your memory?
A researcher at the University of Utah tested this directly. Split-screen "sludge content," where a second unrelated video (gameplay, dominoes falling) plays alongside the main one, has spread across TikTok and Instagram, and plenty of people assumed it wrecks attention. Brendan Schuetze ran two preregistered within-person studies to check, one with 75 participants and one with 100. Each person watched an educational video normally and watched another with a second video playing simultaneously, then took a comprehension test and a memory test on each.
The result: no strong evidence that the split-screen format reduced comprehension or memory. Performance was about the same either way. Self-reported interest was slightly lower for the split-screen version in the second study, but attention difficulty and mental load did not differ.
That is a null result, not a green light. The two studies found no measurable cost to this specific format, under these conditions, for these participants. It does not mean multitasking is fine, or that any distraction is harmless. It means one heavily-discussed format did less damage than assumed.
Then why does distraction wreck my focus sometimes?
Because the distraction that matters most usually isn't on your screen. It's in your head.
A study of 647 people doing everyday learning tasks measured cognitive interference (competing thoughts and demands pulling at attention mid-task) and environmental noise, then tracked how each affected flow, the immersed, locked-in state where work actually gets done. Both remained significantly linked to lower flow even after the researchers accounted for how much attention and engagement people reported. Focused attention had the strongest connection to flow. Task engagement, staying behaviorally on-task, mattered less than expected. You can keep grinding through a chapter while barely absorbing it.
A video in the corner of your screen is external and bounded. Interference and noise reach inside the task itself, and that's what erodes the state you need to learn.
