What looks like laziness is a predictable cluster of executive-function deficits baked into ADHD. Once I understood that, I stopped moralizing my mornings and started engineering them.

Reframing the problem doesn’t make it vanish, but it does move you from self-contempt to solution-building. Why "Lazy" Is the Wrong Word

The moral model of laziness also ignores dopamine. Volkow et al. (2011) found that ADHD involves hypodopaminergic reward pathways. Everyday tasks literally feel less rewarding, so initiation costs spike. When neurotypical brains get a small dopamine bump from checking off a task, ours often don’t. The result is a chronic mismatch between effort and internal payoff, again, not a character flaw.
Psychologically, the “lazy” label becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. CHADD’s summary on shame and ADHD notes that repeated failure plus harsh self-talk creates a cortisol-laden loop that further impairs executive function. In other words, calling yourself lazy makes you perform worse, which “proves” you’re lazy. Breaking that loop starts with accurate language.
The Neurobiology of Time Blindness

Time blindness also scrambles the urgency curve. Neurotypical people ramp up effort as deadlines approach because their brains register increasing threat. Our threat signal arrives late or not at all, so we sprint only at the final hour. Externalizing urgency with public accountability or visual countdown timers restores the missing gradient.
